Innovative Insights: Using Social Network Analysis to Foster Inclusive Innovation

Another impactful application of SNA is in addressing the issue of loneliness among older individuals in rural communities. In a recent EU-funded project, we utilised SNA to analyse the networks of older adults in the UK and Europe. By understanding the relationships these individuals have and the sources of their information, we were able to identify gaps and opportunities for intervention.

For instance, our analysis revealed that many older adults in rural areas rely heavily on a small number of key relationships for their social interactions and information needs. By targeting these central nodes in the network, we can develop policies and interventions that strengthen these connections and create new ones, ultimately reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation.
